An antique small safe supplied by Withy Grove Stores Ltd of Manchester. The firm was established in Manchester in 1850 and became a longstanding supplier of safes and office equipment. The safe has a black painted steel body with olive-green panels outlined in yellow line decoration. The heavy hinged door retains its cast maker’s plaque inscribed “Withy Grove Stores Ltd – Bent Steel Safe – Manchester”, together with a brass turning handle and sliding brass escutcheon marked “Inviolable Lock.”

The interior is painted pale green and fitted with an open storage compartment above a removable internal cash drawer with brass handle and separate lock. The inside of the door retains a Withy Grove Stores “Safe Factors” label. A compact and well-made example with working lock and key.

In antique condition with considerable age-related wear throughout. There are scratches, scuffs, knocks and losses to the black and olive-green painted finish, together with some surface corrosion and wear around the base, hinges and door edges. Further marks and wear are present to the pale green painted interior. The internal drawer remains present. Key for the door is present, but not smaller key for drawer. The door opens and closes, and the safe remains extremely heavy, solid and structurally sound.
