18th Century Antique Large Oak Mule Chest

A well-presented large 18th-century oak mule chest with a panelled front and sides in a geometric moulded style. The chest features two fitted drawers to the base, each with decorative brass backplates, drop handles and escutcheons – likely later additions but in keeping with the piece. The lid lifts off and rests securely in an upright position, fitting neatly into the notched rear stiles rather than being hinged — a typical early feature found on period mule chests. Raised on stile feet. The oak displays a rich, even tone with an appealing patina throughout. Nicely proportioned and full of character.

In good antique condition throughout with some signs of age. There is surface wear in places including age-related marks, scratches, stains and splits to the top (pictured), also marks and scratches to the sides and front (pictured). There is evidence of historic woodworm, however this is now long gone and has been fully treated as a precaution. The antique oak mule chest remains structurally solid and sound. Overall, a good example of its kind.
Our carpenter inspects, repairs, and restores our items, so you can have full confidence that what you buy from us is ready for your home!
