A handsome Victorian walnut Davenport desk of compact proportions, raised on bun feet and retaining a warm rich colour throughout. The leather inset writing slope lifts to reveal a fitted interior with small drawers and compartments, while the upper stationery compartment opens to reveal divisions for pens along with the original ceramic inkwells. Below are two small working drawers with opposing dummy drawer fronts, while one side houses four graduated drawers with corresponding dummy drawers to the reverse. The desk is richly figured throughout with beautifully matched burr walnut veneers, further enhanced by fine boxwood stringing and decorative geometric inlay to the drawer fronts and panels. The turned supports are joined by carved scrolling brackets terminating in shaped platform feet with recessed castors below, giving the piece a strong Gothic revival influence. A highly decorative and practical antique writing desk of excellent quality and striking appearance.
