Antique 18th Century Oak Welsh Dresser

A handsome Welsh oak dresser dating from the 18th century, comprising a narrow dresser base with associated open plate rack above. The base is fitted with three drawers above a shaped apron with attractive scrolling detail, raised on slender turned supports united by a low potboard base. The upper rack features three shelves with a series of small iron hooks beneath, traditionally used for hanging cups, utensils or pewter spoons. The dresser has a boarded back of broad planks. The oak has developed a deep, rich colour and patina throughout with lovely grain and surface character. A particularly attractive country piece with elegant proportions and good scale.

In excellent antique condition throughout with signs of age and use commensurate with period. There is surface wear in places including age-related marks, knocks and scratches throughout the piece. Historic wear and loss to the potboard, particularly to the back right hand corner but this does not detract from the overall appeal of the piece. There is evidence of historic woodworm, as to be expected with a piece of this age. However, this has long gone and has been treated as a precaution. Small block repair to the top, but does not detract from overall appeal. Slight bowing to the shelves and one of the broad back boards. Historic repair to one of the outswept feet of the dresser rack but The drawers run smoothly and the dresser base is structurally solid and sturdy throughout. Overall a very decorative and useful example with lovely colour and patina.
