Antique 18th Century Welsh Oak Cupboard

A neatly proportioned 18th-century Welsh oak two-piece cupboard, or cwpwrdd deuddarn, circa 1780. The oak has acquired a pleasingly light, even tone, likely the result of historic cleaning and refinishing, giving it a warmth and mellow colour in contrast with the darker oak typically associated with antique Welsh furniture.

The upper section is topped by a moulded cornice above a pair of turned pendant finials, and fitted with two fielded-panel cupboard doors that open to reveal two interior shelves. The base section features a characteristically high waist, with two short drawers over two fielded-panel cupboard doors, enclosing a single fixed shelf. All are fitted with antique brass knobs and inlaid escutcheons. It stands on shaped bracket feet, completing the balanced and provincial design.
